Horror is all about opinions and perspectives. What may be #scary for someone may not necessarily be scary enough for someone else. We are all different and that is part of what makes us human.
My Humble Opinion...
So with that in mind, what is the scariest movie you have ever seen? In my case I would be quick to point out to #thering or #thesixthsense or more recently #hereditary or #insidious (let's just consider the first one for this though).
To me those four movies hit different personal notes that truly terrified me upon first viewing. I mean do not tell me that seeing the above scene does not make you feel uneasy. Plus, The Ring does count with a very disturbing story and plenty of scares! Plus back when it was released, it definetely tapped into fears of the unknown as it could happen to anyone. How many times did we in our youth have a #vhs tape that had no name and we could only find out what it was by playing it, huh? #blockbuster at least had them labeled but alright...
Same can be said for Insidious, as that movie has a very creative and original storyline. It takes the #hauntedhouse and #possession genre and turns them both on their heads as it places children in mortal peril but also shows something horror movies have not engaged in as much. It basically shows that #parents can believe their kids and even when trying to help them, they just cannot. Normally, families do not believe their kids but here not only do they believe them, they actually try to help but is not as easy. It also counts with some very disturbing scenes (bet you will flinch with that demon) and the common thread is both the unknown and the fact that you as the audience feel like they could happen to you.
Meanwhile The Sixth Sense and Hereditary share something in common. While both movies count with #tonicollette , they also count with stories about family drama and dynamics mixed with the very real horrors of growing up and accepting trauma. In my opinion, The Sixth Sense is scary just for the fact that makes you wonder if it could happen to you. If suddenly you could start seeing ghosts as the little boy does. What would you do?
Meanwhile, Hereditary made audiences ambivalent but to me, it is truly one of the best horror movies of the last few years. Actually, let me take that back. This is my favorite horror movie ever! The film counts with an engaging story and pulls all the stops becoming such a #rollercoaster of emotions, where fear and shock reign! When I watched it, it scared me so much to the point where my palms were sweating. I did not think the movie could keep going and it just did all the way to a horrifying yet satisfying finale. I was not alone with those feelings by the way. Many more seem to feel the same way...
But whether you agree with me or not, which probably you will not as we are all different- there are many people interested in finding the best horror movies ever. Case in point, science has been trying to find out the scariest films ever. Let's dig in!
Science Says HELLO...
Recently a group of #scientists engaged in a study to find out what made the audience tick or actually 'sweat' and almost get heart attacks during horror movies. The way they conducted it was to have the audience strapped on to a machine and check their heart rates as the movies progressed. With that, they found out that the scariest movies were as follow:
Now, while these films may not be everybody's favorites, they were the ones that made the audience the most scared. When we say 'audience' we mean people like you and me. Mainly single and married #males between 25-40 years old of age. These were also people who enjoy horror movies so we are not talking about random people. The study was difficult because they had to find #people who for some reason had not seen those movies either. I think that definetely is the most difficult part of the study as I do not think I could trust any horror fan who has not seen any of those movies at this point.
Something I noticed by looking at this list is definetely the fact that they are all about families and how they get affected by supernatural elements. Here is where our love for #disney could come into play. Most of these movies feature kids in peril and families trying to survive over something that they never expected to happen to them. On top of that, there is always some kind of #supernatural entity whether an #alien #monster or #ghosts and #demons - but always an external force trying to destroy these families. Oh, hello Disney and your fractured families from most movies haha.
Anyway, if you want to learn more about the study check this out! Plus notice how another one of my favorite scary movies was also included in there even though it was not mentioned on the first study. Weird, I guess I am good at identifying some of the best scary movies!
So, now that you know this- what are your favorite horror movies? Well, not just favorites though. What are the scariest movies you have ever seen? Or to quote #Ghostface, what's your favorite scary movie, #sidney?" Eager to hear your thoughts!
